The
2016 Continental GT’s are offered as a four-seat coupe or convertible, you have
a choice of three twin-turbo engines: There is a 500-hp V-8, a 521-hp V-8 S,
and a 582-hp W-12; all feature an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive.
I
drove the $257,000.00 coupe designed for the ultra rich. The Bentley GT is getting old. It was
introduced thirteen years ago.
The smaller Bentley GT
introduced a second engine to the GT line in 2013. It was the V-8 that reduced weight in the front of the
Continental GT S reduced weight up front allowing for better handling on the
best roads traveled.
The only engine enhanced for
Bentley’s is the original VW W-12. The Continental GT V8 S continues with the
same 521-hp variant of the Volkswagen Group’s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8.
Exterior of the Continental
GT looks similar but look closer and for 2016 look at the sharp creases in the
metal this year. The deck lid was restyled and the grill changed.
The interior has both Porpoise and Beluga hides. The center
console has been updated. The steering wheel is smaller in the newest models of
the Continental GT.
The reworked Volkswagen W-12
is so powerful but the newer Twin Turbo V8 lighter offering the driver a V-8 that
can traverse the back roads easier than the W-12. VW’s Porsche 911 Turbo can compete very well with the
Continental but the handling of the Porsche Continental cannot match. It is a much larger car closer to the
size of VW’s Audi Sport Quattro’s.
We
were able to move the Continental GT V8 S from zero to 60 in under four
seconds. Braking was impressive
stopping the Coupe in 155 feet from 70 miles per hour.
The
limiter on the speed is 188.
Fuel
economy with the V8 is 15 city and 25 highway as if the rich driving on Worth
Avenue or Rodeo Drive care!
Look
forward to driving a convertible some day soon.
