Beijing,
China. Following in
Bentley’s lead Lambroghini announced at the Auto Show they will be selling a
limited number of a SUV. They state that the SUV will be a supercar. In part
because the Urus it will be
powered by a 600 horsepower engine with permanent all-wheel drive. Just like
most of Lambroghini’s cars the body will be made of carbon fiber and
lightweight materials. Few other
details have been given.
The
aerodynamic design, 24 inch wheels, high-speed stability. On the interior it is
expected to deliver four bucket seats and a lot of carbon fiber.
The
Urus SUV will be compact and low according to Lambroghini. But with a length of
16.4 feet, 5.4 feet tall and width of 6.5 feet it will stand out.
Lambroghini
built the Cheetah for U.S. military back in 1977.
Lambroghini
made a more combat version on its first build in 2007 of an SUV called the
LM002. Mobility Technology
International was hired to build the vehicle in San Jose, California.
The Chrysler 5.9 liter engine only
developed 180 horses so it was underpowered. Body was fiberglass and the
vehicle held four armed persons and a driver.
Next came the LM001 off-road
vehicle designed by Lamborghini. It was unveiled at the 1981 Geneva Auto Show.
The only
difference between Cheetah and the LM001 was that the last one was powered by a
180 hp 5.9L AMC built V8, with the intention of offering the V12 from the
Countach for production models. The LM001 was a failure in part for the large
engine was in the rear and affected performance.
The last model
was known as the LM002 was built
between 1986 and 1993. Known as "Rambo".
The 300 units
produced were powered by a 5167 cc V12 engine from the Countach with a maximum
power of 450 hp. The LM-002 became
was a success with standard equipment included every luxury item available,
leather seats, thick color-matched carpeting everywhere, air-conditioning,
tinted power-windows, a stereo system mounted in a roof console and much more.
Bentley states
their engine will be the V-12 TDI developing 500 horsepower.
Urus is “ the wild ancestor of modern
domestic cattle. The Spanish fighting bulls Lamborghini often uses to name its
models.
"We
definitely need a third line in the mid- and long term," said CEO Stephan
Winkelmann to a German paper. "An SUV would be the first Lamborghini for everyday use, not just for the
race track or weekends. We would have the opportunity to win new customers. It
usually takes 48 months until an all-new vehicle arrives at dealers, so the new
Lamborghini would not be available to buy before 2017."
