Words like “breathtaking” and “irresistible” punctuate the history of BMW Convertibles. Now, BMW has opened a new chapter in the tradition of open-top cars. The new BMW 650i Convertible fulfils the wishes of the most discerning automotive enthusiast as The Ultimate Driving Machine® with groundbreaking luxury and crisp good looks. In the premium convertible market, the 650i Convertible presents a convincing case with the most advanced chassis technology and most innovative comfort, infotainment and safety features.

The all-new third generation 650i Convertible is in the US this Spring as a 2012 model with an MSRP of $91,375 (including $875 Destination and Handling). Option and packages pricing will bring the cost up further into high 90’s.

A sweeping hood, aft-set passenger compartment, long wheelbase and muscular profile embody the hallmark proportions of a BMW Convertible. The new BMW 650i Convertible combines these features with a classic soft-top roof with flying buttress design. Powerfully contoured surfaces of its lines promise the anticipated BMW driving experience. The luxurious ambience of the interior is highlighted by a driver-oriented cockpit which wraps the front and rear passengers in a feeling of aesthetic security. Nowhere is the high-class functionality of the interior underlined more prominently than in the redesigned freestanding 10.2” Central Display of the standard iDrive control system.

The BMW 650i is delivered with their V-8 engine with High Precision direct injection and turbocharging.  This 4.4-liter V-8 engine develops a maximum 400 hp between 5,500 and 6,400 rpm, and makes peak torque of 450 lb-ft between 1,750 and 4,500 rpm (preliminary). This unique “reverse-flow” engine, whose turbochargers are positioned in the V-area between the cylinder banks, produces an instantaneous and sustained wave of power, making it an energetic delight for the enthusiast driver.

Instantaneous power and torque are the stand-out features of the V-8 engine available of the new BMW 650i Convertible. The engine is extremely smooth and fuel efficient. The engine can be mated with either BMW’s new 8-speed Sport Automatic gearbox or BMW’s traditional 6-speed manual transmission.

The new BMW 650i Convertible moves from 0 to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds with the manual transmission (4.9 seconds with the 8-speed automatic), and top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph.

The 8-speed Sport Automatic transmission has an innovative gear set configuration allowing this transmission to offer eight gears, optimizing the sprinting power yet allowing the driver to save fuel by driving at low revs. The leather wrapped steering wheel has the wonderful shift paddles to allow for manual mode shifting.

In addition to the efficiency of the engine and 8-speed Sport Automatic transmission, an extensive range of BMW EfficientDynamics measures contribute to reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Brake Energy Regeneration, on-demand operation of ancillary components, intelligent lightweight construction and extensive aerodynamic refinement ensure maximum efficiency.

Chassis Management and optional Integral Active Steering.
Cutting-edge chassis technology gives the new BMW 650i Convertible the tools to provide both sporty handling and exceptional comfort. The double wishbone front axle and the multi-link rear axle are made predominantly from aluminum. The chassis is geared to the requirements of drivers with sporting intentions, although the dampers also respond sensitively to bumps in the road surface under high lateral acceleration. The optional Active Roll Stabilization combines with the standard Dynamic Damper Control to offer the driver even more precise responses and perfectly flat cornering ability. The electronically controlled shock absorbers adapt to the road surface and the driver’s style to perfectly control the car’s body motions.

The electronically controlled damper system in the new BMW 6 Series Convertible adjusts compression and rebound settings continuously and independently. For example, a stiff chassis setting can be combined with comfortable responses to unevenness in the road surface. The control unit of the damping system processes the data supplied by sensors on the lifting movements of the wheels and the ride height of the car. The driving speed and the damper setting chosen by the driver are also taken into account in calculating the damping force required for each individual wheel to even out body movements. This data is fed back to the damper units at intervals of just 2.5 milliseconds. It is just amazing what the electronics on the 650i can do.

The optional Active Roll Stabilization feature  reduces body roll in high-speed corners and in sudden changes of direction, or transitions. Sensors calculate the amount of body roll based on the driving situation at hand, and this is then counteracted quickly and precisely by hydraulic rotary actuators in the front and rear axle swaybars, leading to a significant improvement in body motion management.

The electric power steering features standard Servotronic vehicle-speed sensitive assistance, and serves up the familiar BMW recipe of precision, comfort and linear response.

The new BMW 650i Convertible is the first car in its class that can be equipped with Integral Active Steering. This system combines the Active Steering system for the front axle with a new, steerable rear axle. Precisely harmonized steering angle movements at both axles create a virtual lengthening or shortening of the vehicle’s wheelbase, which fosters greater high-speed stability and enhanced maneuverability for parking and city use.

The lightweight floating-caliper brakes with vented discs are easy to use with precision, and their effectiveness is reinforced by Dynamic Stability Control (DSC). DSC brings together technology such as the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), the Start-off Assistant, the automatic Brake Drying function and Brake Fade Compensation. Standard equipment also includes 8.5 x19-inch light-alloy wheels, with all-season runflat tires (size 245/40 R19) and a tire pressure monitoring system.

With standard Driving Dynamics Control, the dominant virtues of athletic driving sportiness and ride comfort can be chosen by the driver as situations demand. The driver can choose settings of COMFORT, NORMAL, SPORT and SPORT+ modes using the large rocker switch on the center console. Affected parameters include the tuning of the throttle response, power steering assistance, shock absorbers, roll stabilization (if equipped), Integral Active Steering (if equipped), and automatic transmission shift characteristics. In SPORT+ mode, the Dynamic Traction Control mode of the standard Dynamic Stability Control system is activated, raising the thresholds for stability intervention in the most sport-oriented driving circumstances.

The BMW 650i Convertible has as BMW states its athletic presence and sporty exterior design. A long hood, aft-set passenger compartment, long wheelbase and muscular profile create the proportions signature to a BMW Convertible. The precise interplay of eye-catching lines and meticulously sculpted surfaces help to give the new BMW 650i Convertible its show-stopping looks.

The new BMW 650i Convertible introduces the viewer to its dynamic character through its front end design. The large, slightly forward-slanting BMW kidney grille – the “6 Series shark nose” as characterized by many enthusiasts – gives the car a sense of surging forward, while a broad air intake, strikingly contoured hood and muscular wheel arches hint at the powerful engine and athletic roadholding abilities. High-quality chrome elements positioned on the outer edges of the front apron further accentuate the width of the car. The standard LED foglamps are placed in front of these chrome elements.

The standard Xenon Adaptive headlights of the new BMW 650i Convertible pick up BMW’s familiar “twin round” headlamp appearance. An LED accent strip cuts across the top of them. The daytime running lights appear through familiar LED corona rings, whose bright white light illuminates the distinctive front end. A horizontal light strip below the corona rings, meanwhile, handles the turn signal duties.

BMW states in their press materials  that  “Uninterrupted, flowing lines lend the silhouette of the BMW 650i Convertible a sweeping elegance. Powerful curves mimic the natural movement of waves. The hallmark BMW character line at door handle level is spawned in the front wheel arch gill – which houses the side indicator lamp – and extends all the way back to join the rear lights. “

Wide and flat surfaces define the rear of the new BMW 650i Convertible. The dominance of horizontal lines adds extra emphasis to the wider track of the new car compared to its predecessor. In addition, downward-converging lines underline the car’s focus on the road, echoing the approach at the front end. This distinctive V-shape is created by lines including the side edges of the trunklid, the license plate surround and the contours of the reflectors positioned in the bumper. The slightly concave lower section of the trunklid produces light and shade effects which lend an extra lightness to the rear of the car.

The two-part rear light clusters give BMW’s familiar L-shape a particularly sporty edge. Inside, two LED-powered light strips create the familiar BMW “bloodlines” night-time look.

The new BMW 650i Convertible again features an electrically powered soft-top roof with flying buttress architecture. The multi-layer canvas roof –optimized in terms of its acoustic properties and structural rigidity – offers outstanding thermal insulation and thus enables the new convertible to be used comfortably all year round. The buttresses project out along the flanks of the 650i into its rear section, accentuating the car’s gracefully sweeping silhouette and giving it an unmistakable appearance. The transition of the roofline into the rear end flows as smoothly as on a hard-top coupe.

The heated, vertical glass rear window, which is situated just behind the rear seats, is retracted independently from the soft top itself. This reduces the volume of the soft-top components that need to be stowed in the soft-top compartment, leaving more room for luggage in the low-profile trunk of the new BMW 650i Convertible. The independent rear window also allows just the right amount of fresh air to be admitted to the car, when desired. Conversely, leaving the rear window up while lowering the top keeps air turbulence in the rear to a minimum.

The automatic opening and closing operation for the roof is activated by holding a button on the center console. Opening the roof takes 19 seconds, the closing process 24 seconds.

970  Gear selector and controls for 650i Convertible

The new BMW 650i Convertible is designed to be a 2+2-seater. Its interior offers individually tailored seats for the driver, front passenger and rear passengers. High-quality materials, carefully coordinated colors and, once again, meticulously formed surfaces combine to produce an ambience defined by luxury, sweeping style and Teutonic functionality.  The central section of the instrument panel, containing the iDrive system’s Central Display, the air vents and the controls for the audio system and air conditioning, are all angled slightly towards the driver.

The black-panel instrument cluster of the new BMW 650i Convertible combines the traditional sports car circular instruments with state-of-the-art display technology. The Navigation system, telephone and entertainment functions are operated using the iDrive control system. The on-board monitor takes the form of a freestanding display for the first time in the new BMW 650i Convertible. The standard 10.2 inch screen features a high-quality galvanized chrome surround. Transreflective technology ensures the display remains easy-to-read in bright sunlight.
At 192.6 in. in length, the new BMW 650i Convertible is 2.9 in. longer than its predecessor. Its extended wheelbase now stretches to 112.4 in.. The car is 1.5 in. wider, measuring 74.5 in. across, while 0.35 in. have been shaved from its height now 53.7 in..

A ski bag with a pass-through opening in the rear seat backrest is available as part of the Cold Weather Package (also adds heated steering wheel and heated front seats) and offers space for two sets of skis. The new BMW 650i Convertible boasts 10.6 cu. ft.  of trunk space with the convertible top open, allowing two 46-inch golf bags and a business case to be accommodated. With the roof closed, the variable soft-top stowage compartment can be folded up in a single movement to increase trunk capacity to 12.3 cu. ft.

New lightweight technology, comprehensive safety equipment.
The new BMW 650i Convertible is fitted with newly developed lightweight seats with an integrated seatbelt system and standard 20-way multi-contour adjustability and adjustable lumbar support. Optionally, the Luxury Seating Package adds front ventilated seats and active fatigue reduction can be added. All seat variants come with crash-activated anti-whiplash head restraints.

The range of standard safety equipment also includes front airbags, head-thorax side airbags integrated into the seat frame, three-point automatic belts for all seats, belt force limiters and front belt pre-tensioners, ISOFIX child seat mounts in the rear and a standard Roll-Over Protection System. The Roll-Over Protection System developed for the new BMW 650i Convertible consists of two high-strength aluminum roll-bars hidden behind the rear head restraints. If the integrated safety electronics register a risk of the car rolling over, the pyrotechnic release mechanism is activated, causing the high-strength aluminum roll-bars to rise from their stowed position in a fraction of a second.

This weight optimization has been combined with an improvement in passive safety; the car’s mean body strength is 29 percent greater than its predecessor. This has been achieved primarily through the use of high-strength multi-phase steels, high-strength hot-molded steels and aluminum.

The new BMW 650i Convertible is available with a great variety of driver assistance systems and mobility services from BMW ConnectedDrive. The comprehensive Driver Assistance Package includes Automatic High Beams, Lane Departure Warning, Active Blind Spot Detection, Rear and Top View cameras, Parking Assistant, and a new three-dimensional, full-color Head-Up Display. Also available are BMW’s Night Vision with Pedestrian Detection, Active Cruise Control with stop-and-go capability.

The standard HiFi audio system in the new BMW 650i Convertible comes with an HD Radio receiver, MP3-compatible CD drive, AUX-IN connection, and a HiFi loudspeaker system with nine speakers. The optional Premium Sound Package adds SiriusXM satellite radio with a 1-year subscription, iPod and USB adapter, and the Premium HiFi system comprised of 12 loudspeakers and a digital amplifier. It features DIRAC signal processing and model-specific equalizing.

The new BMW 650i Convertible is the only vehicle in its class with an optional Head-Up Display system. By projecting important information onto the windshield, directly in the driver’s line of sight, the Head-Up Display minimizes distraction from the road and traffic. At the same time the Head-Up Display is now able to present a wider range of information. Depending on vehicle specification, guidance information supplied by the Navigation system, Check Control messages, status messages from the Lane Departure Warning System and warnings from the BMW Night Vision system can all be shown in the Head-Up Display. The positioning of the messages on the windshield is highly ergonomic, so that drivers are aware of them without having to refocus or take their eyes off the road.

The intensity of the projection automatically adjusts to the ambient light level, and the brightness setting can be adjusted via the iDrive menu. The driver can also choose what information will appear in the Head-Up Display in addition to road speed and warnings from the driver assistance systems.

The 650i has standard Park Distance Control, which uses ultrasonic sensors to monitor distance from objects in front or behind, the new BMW 650i Convertible also features a standard rear-view camera. The camera is integrated in the trunklid under the BMW “roundel” badge. When the rear-view camera is activated, the roundel badge pivots up out of the way to expose the camera lens. The perspective-corrected color images are relayed to the Central Display. Superimposed on the images are interactive tracking lines which indicate the optimal steering angle for parking, as well as the tightest turning circle.

The optional Top View system with Side View provides an even more comprehensive picture. In addition to the rear-view camera and the PDC sensors, this system also uses a fish-eye camera in each of the side mirrors. The data acquired by Top View is relayed to a central computer which generates a bird’s eye view of both vehicle and surroundings and presents the image in the Central Display. This view allows the driver to maneuver precisely in confined spaces. I have used a similar system on the Infiniti QX56 and it is superb. A great option.

The Side View function uses two cameras integrated in the front fenders to provide an improved view of cross-traffic at speeds below 10mph. These images are relayed to the Central Display where they may give the driver an early idea of what is happening on the road to the left and right of the car when pulling out from narrow and concealed gateways or car park exits.

If you want it all and enjoy driving with the top down this is one beautiful ride. Or as they state “The Ultimate Driving Machine”!

2012 MERCEDES CLS 4 DOOR COUPE

2012 MERCEDES CLS
BY BRUCE HUBBARD
AUTO ADVISOR GROUP

This week, U.S. journalists are test-driving the very first new-generation 2012 CLS coupes arriving in the U.S. I was not able to drive the new four door Coupe but others who did indicated the “first” drive was impressive.  The all-new CLS-Class coupe represents the first major redesign of a car that established an entirely new market segment - the four-door coupe, which combines the emotional appeal and dynamic design of a coupe with the comfort and functionality of a sedan. The 2012 CLS line consists of three  models, all powered by new biturbo direct-injection V8 engines. Even better the German’s added as I requested years ago the 4MATIC all-wheel-drive. A base vehicle will cost you $71,300 for the CLS550, $73,800 for the CLS550 4MATIC and $94,900 for the high-performance CLS63 AMG (not including delivery charges of $875). Add the other options or upgrades and expect to pay a lot more depending on what you select from the amazing offers of equipment.

Some journalist and designers state the new CLS looks similar to the S-Class, CL or E-Class  Mercedes. The CLS fits right between the S-Class-based CL and the E-Class two-door to form a family of Mercedes coupes that makes efficient use of existing chassis and powertrain layouts while preserving their unique individual identities. More Fuel-Efficient CLS550 With its new 4.6-liter direct-injection twin-turbo V8 the new CLS550 achieves 26 percent better fuel mileage (est. 18 city / 26 hwy) than the previous model, while still producing 402 horsepower and 443 lb-ft. of torque.

The CLS550 is equipped with new electrically assisted power steering, AIRMATIC air suspension and a revised seven-speed automatic transmission. Standard Mercedes safety technology on all CLS coupes includes PRE-SAFE, ABS anti-lock brakes with Brake Assist, ATTENTION ASSIST, traction control and the ESP electronic stability control. DISTRONIC PLUS with PRE-SAFE Brake is optionally available, as well as Active Blind Spot Assist and Active Lane Keeping Assist. Mercedes and BMW have some of the best systems for similar vehicles. History shows that Mercedes has developed many of the superb safety features far before any other manufacturer.

The 5.5-liter version of the new direct-injection V8 engine in the 2012 CLS63 AMG is rated at 518 hp and 516 lb.-ft of torque. An optional AMG Performance Package increases output to 550 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. Even with its high-performance, the CLS63 AMG is 26 percent more fuel efficient (est. 15 city / 23 hwy), thanks in part to an innovative ECO stopstart system. Whenever the AMG model stops in "D" or "N" with the brake pedal depressed in "Controlled Efficiency" transmission mode, the engine is automatically turned off to save fuel. As soon as the driver releases the brake, the engine computer decides which piston is in the best position for first ignition, and the direct fuel injection and multi-spark systems work with a starter motor to re-start the engine almost instantly.

The CLS63 AMG features a 7-speed MCT (multi-clutch technology) sport transmission with an innovative start-up clutch that replaces the conventional torque converter. Providing the direct feedback of a manual transmission with the total convenience of an automatic, the MCT transmission offers impressive versatility and faster shift times.

In addition to larger brakes and wider wheels and tires, the CLS63 AMG also has a unique combination of steel coil springs at the front and AIRMATIC suspension at the rear, which provides especially responsive handling from the front suspension, while the self-leveling AIRMATIC at the rear maintains consistent ride height, regardless of the load. Along with a tubular front stabilizer bar, the CLS63 AMG is fitted with special front control arms and wheel hub carriers that provide wider track and more negative camber for even better grip in high speed curves. The CLS63 AMG rear suspension includes new track rods and push-pull rods as well as more rigid sub-frame mounts that all contribute to enhanced cornering.

The car is new and we need time to drive it for a week to give a complete analysis. But, from just a brief encounter it will probably be one the finest journeys we have ever encountered.

Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid

 By Bruce Hubbard
Auto Advisor Group

The 918 Spyder will feature a high revving 500-plus horsepower V8 engine assisted by two electric motors with a total of at least 218 horsepower, yet Porsche estimates it will consume only 3.0 L/100 km based on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). Official EPA fuel economy figures or estimates will be announced just before the first customer cars begin arriving in the United States near the end of 2013.

Porsche will produce no more than 918 examples. Start of production at Porsche's  factory in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen is planned for Sept. 18, 2013 (9/18), and the U.S. base manufacturer's suggested retail price is $845,000 (excluding destination and handling charges).

With its design inspired by past Porsches like the Carrera GT super sports car and the legendary 917 and highly successful RS Spyder race cars, the 918 Spyder remains faithful to the 2010 concept car. Unlike the concept car, the two-seat production version, based on a carbon fiber-reinforced plastic monocoque, will feature a manual roof system with removable panels that can be stored in the front luggage compartment.

The 918 Spyder will be powered by a unique plug-in hybrid system that will include a high-revving, mid-mounted V8 engine with capacity of more than 4.0 liters and producing at least 500 horsepower. The engine will be based on the Porsche RS Spyder racing engine that demonstrated its impressive performance and efficiency through multiple Michelin Green X Challenge victories in the American Le Mans Series, the Le Mans Series and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Power will be transferred to the rear wheels via Porsche's compact, seven-speed Porsche-Doppelkupplung (PDK) double-clutch gearbox.
Two electric motors – one each on the front and rear axles – together will provide approximately 218 additional horsepower. This configuration also will offer an innovative, variable all-wheel drive system with independent control of the drive forces on both axles. Electrical energy will be stored in a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery that can be recharged from a standard household outlet. Electric-only driving range is expected to be more than 16 miles on the NEDC. Recharge time will depend on each country's electrical power network, but charging is expected to take about seven hours at 110V/10A in the United States. A quick-charge option is being evaluated to further reduce charging times.

With anticipated combined fuel consumption of just 3.0 L/100 km on the NEDC, this equates to CO2 emissions of only 70 g/km or 112 g/mile. On the other hand, the Porsche 918 Spyder will deliver super sports car performance. It is estimated that the final production version will accelerate from zero to 60 mph in about 3.1 seconds on its way to an estimated top track speed of 199 mph. It should also tackle Germany's famed Nürburgring Nordschleife in less than 7 minutes and 30 seconds, two seconds faster than the Porsche Carrera GT. Under the right conditions, the 918 Spyder will be able to drive on electric power alone at speeds up to 94 mph for limited distances.

Take a look at Jaguar’s C-X75 which is similar to the Porsche and expensive. 250 units Jaguar states will be built at $1 million each.

Customers who order the 918 Spyder also have the opportunity to acquire a special-edition 911 Turbo S Coupe or Cabriolet. Also limited to no more than 918 units, the 911 Turbo S Edition 918 Spyder will have exterior and interior design elements echoing the plug-in hybrid 918 Spyder supercar's styling. It features similar exterior colors, carbon-fiber elements inside and out, enhanced leather equipment and numerous acid-green accents on items such as the brake calipers, illuminated sill plates, interior stitching and instrument cluster needles. A limited-edition badge on the glove compartment door will feature the same production number as the customer's 918 Spyder.

Worldwide 918 Spyder customers can begin ordering this special edition 911 Turbo S sports car today, and customer deliveries will start later in 2011. The U.S. base manufacturer's suggested retail prices for the Coupe and Cabriolet versions are the same as the standard 911 Turbo S models, $160,700 and $172,100 respectively, excluding destination.

Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS -all wheel drive

PORSCHE 911 CARRERA 4 GTS – NOW WITH ALL-WHEEL-DRIVE

New Flagship Carrera ideal for all-weather performance

Building on the well-received 911 Carrera GTS with its extra power, visual panache and extensive extras for an attractive price, Porsche  announced the 911 Carrera 4 GTS, an all-wheel-drive model, and when equipped with the proper tires, has proven more than competent for all seasons and all road conditions. The Carrera 4 GTS wraps an aggressive wide body around a long list of performance, comfort and cosmetic enhancements.

A GTS exclusive power upgrade of 23 hp over the 911 Carrera 4S on which it is based enables the 3.8-liter 911 Carrera 4 GTS – available as a coupe and cabriolet – to accelerate from zero to 60 mph 0.1 second faster; a Carrera 4 GTS coupe equipped with the optional seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) and the optional Sport Chrono Package Plus makes the sprint in just 4.0 seconds. Top-track speed is also increased to 187 mph (186 mph w/PDK).

The 911 Carrera 4 GTS features an electronically-controlled Porsche Traction Management (PTM) all-wheel drive system that delivers impressive traction and powerful acceleration in any driving situation. The electromagnetically-controlled multi-plate clutch reacts within fractions of a second and ensures optimum distribution of power between the front and rear axles. A standard mechanical limited-slip differential further improves traction and driving stability around turns and on varying road surfaces. I  have driven the system on many Porsche vehciles and it is state of the art. Porsche would not have it any other way.

The 3.8-liter flat-six delivers its 408 hp thanks to a number of internal changes, including a special resonance intake manifold with six vacuum-controlled tuning flaps. Maximum torque is available at 4,200 rpm; 200 rpm earlier compared with the Carrera 4S. The extra power is enhanced by a standard sports exhaust system with four black tailpipes finished with polished, nano-coated inner shells.

Like every all-wheel-drive 911 model, the Carrera 4 GTS features a body with 44-mm wider wheel arches at the rear.

You can spot the GTS All Wheel Drive model because of its SportDesign front apron, black side skirts from the 911 GT2 and a black panel between the rear tailpipes. Center-locking 19-inch RS Spyder design wheels, painted in high-gloss black with polished lips are a final visual flourish.

Inside, black is the dominant color, with the standard interior featuring Alcantara on the center sections of the standard sport seats with their larger side bolsters. Black Alcantara  is also used wherever the driver comes into direct contact with the vehicle – like on the rim of the three-spoke SportDesign steering wheel and on the gear and handbrake levers.

The extra all-weather performance, visual muscle and standard equipment of the 911 Carrera 4 GTS comes at an attractive price. On sale this fall, the 911 Carrera 4 GTS Coupe will be available in the US at a base MSRP price of $110,200 while the 911 Carrera 4 GTS Cabriolet will be priced at $120,100.

Largest Electric Bus Fleet in World Launches – BYD

By Bruce Hubbard
From BYD press release

Largest Electric Bus Fleet in World Launches – BYD
Delivers First Orders

CHANGSHA, PRC – BYD , manufacturer of the first long-range, all-electric bus , has
been selected as the sole eBUS provider for the 2011 International Universiade Games which will be held in Shenzhen, China. BYD was awarded the order of over 300 eBUS-12’s to be delivered before August 2011.

After the Universiade Games, these 300 eBUSes will be incorporated into Shenzhen’s city bus fleet – creating the largest all-electric bus fleet in the world.

In line with BYD’s vision for a zero-emission eco-system, the eBUS is the first pure electric bus designed and manufactured independently by BYD and is a confluence of BYD’s technical capabilities. At the core of the eBUS technology is BYD’s in-wheel motor drive system and the Iron Phosphate or “Fe” battery technology.

Because the drive system requires no axel, the eBUS floor can sit lower than any other bus, making it very riderfriendly.

The Fe battery boasts the highest safety, longest service life and most environmentally friendly
rechargeable chemistry. With these technologies, the BYD eBUS achieves a “loaded bus” city driving range of more than 150 miles (or 250 Km) and it only takes about half an hour to achieve a 50% state-of-charge using BYD’s proprietary fast charging. The eBUS also integrates BYD solar panels on the bus roof, converting solar energy to electricity which is stored in the Fe batteries and can completely offset the eBUS air-conditioning load  (extending the range on sunny days).

eBUS fleet testing has been conducted over the first half of 2011 and is referenced in the “BYD Fleet Summary”   released April 29th , 2011. The all-electric test fleet using the eBUS-12 has now logged over 33,649 all-electric miles  with the eBUS predominantly charged off-peak at the station terminal,
utilizing the lowest night-time energy rates.

BYD is ranked #1 at the top of Bloomberg’s and BusinessWeek's 2009 Tech 100 List
and is the leading manufacturer of advanced, environmentally-friendly battery technologies like the BYD’s Iron Phosphate battery. BYD’s solar panels and LED lighting systems have TUV/CE and UL listings, and the company enjoys rapid growth in consumer electronics space and automobile manufacturing under its BYD brand. With investments from Warren Buffett
(Berkshire Hathaway) and MidAmerican Energy Holdings, today, BYD is the fastest-growing Chinese
automotive and green energy technology manufacturer.

"The Mille Miglia" with BMW 328

When the BMW 328 drew up to the start line for the first time in June 1936, nobody suspected that it would soon become a legend. 75 years on BMW Classic is sending 12 examples of the 328 out on the hot-heeled dash from Brescia to Rome and back. "The Mille Miglia is the race that defines the reputation of the BMW 328 to this day," explains Karl Baumer, Director of BMW Group Classic. "That’s why, like last year, we’ve brought a record dozen examples of the BMW 328 to Italy." Lining up once again alongside the standard production cars will be the racing models, headed by the overall winner of last year’s Mille Miglia – the BMW 328 Touring Coupé. After celebrating its ‘Mille’ premiere in 2010, the long-lost BMW 328 Kamm Coupé has again been entered "out of competition" in the event. BMW Classic teams

2012 Volkswagen Beetle

THE NEW VOLKSWAGEN BEETLE
BRUCE HUBBARD
AUTO ADVISOR GROUP

Who has never had a story or loved the “hippy VW”.  From the Beeltle to the Hippy Van.  I certainly remember driving  a Beetle in the winter with no heat trying to clear the windshield to drive.  When it rained the windshield wipers were too slow to stop the rain from allowing me a free view.  To own a VW Beetle was an adventure. The air cooled engine “world car” was one of the best vehicles ever produced.  Sure it did not have power or the best brakes, best windshield wipers, or ever dynamic stability control or traction control. But what a wonderful vehicle it was and is today.

When the first Beetle rolled off the production line, it was called simply the Volkswagen — “the people’s car” — but its distinctive shape inspired nicknames across the globe: Beetle, Käfer, Vocho, Coccinelle, Fusca, Maggiolino or 甲壳虫! In total, 21.5 million cars were sold.  Today Volkswagen is trying to be the “Worlds Car”. By that I mean they want it all. They want to own the number one spot.  Looks to me as if they will be able to do that. As I stated in other articles manufacturers stated to m once a customer bought an AUDI they could never get them as a customer.

Remember 15 to 20 years ago no one would buy an Audi thanks to a “flawed” report on the superior German company.  Audi was one of the finest automotive companies who brought vehicle to USA. Today I believe Audi rules the high end market over BMW, Lexus, Acura  and Mercedes . Look at the world class interiors and the design inside and out. They are the best. Now lets look at performance and handling of the high end vehicles.

Volkswagen has proven to North America that not just their premier gasoline engines but their TDI clean Diesels are the best.

If I was to buy any vehicle it would be a diesel and the best are Audi or Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes.

BMW just won an award for their diesel which came in part with their affiliation with BMW and Mercedes.

The Beetle could be another Mini fighter. Add Fiat’s 500 with even the high end Abarth or Mopar version I can imagine the Beetle to have a performance version of the Beetle.

More than 60 years later, in 1998, the “New Beetle” rekindled the spirit and imagination of the original to a new generation of Volkswagen owners. The second generation version sparked another round of uplifting and joyous enthusiasm known as Beetle Mania.

Only someone who knows and respects the Beetle’s heritage could produce a new generation of this storied vehicle. .

The designers  at VW developed the new car around the earliest Beetle profile rather than the 1998 New Beetle. The 2012 Beetle is an automotive icon reinvented. Placing the original Beetle and the 21st Century Beetle next to one another, it’s clear that the lines of the rear sections are nearly identical, but the overall look is bolder and more dynamic.

“The Beetle is now characterized by a clean, self-confident and dominant sportiness. The car not only has a lower profile; it is also substantially wider, the front hood is longer, the front windshield is shifted further back and has a much steeper incline. All of this creates a new dynamism,” explains Klaus Bischoff.

The 2012 Beetle is 71.2 inches wide (3.3 inches wider), 58.5 inches tall (.5 inches lower) and 168.4 inches long (6 inches longer). The new focal point is the C-pillar. The development team also increased the car’s track widths and wheelbase. All of this gives the Beetle a powerful appearance with muscular tension.
Another feature is the rear spoiler that is integrated into the design (standard on 2.0L TSI engines with 200 hp). The top surface of the rear spoiler is black, while the underside is painted in body color.

The Beetle is sportier, offering both turbo-charged TDI Clean Diesel and turbo-charged gasoline engines, in addition to dual exhaust, performance-handling packages, 19-inch wheels, sport seats and new, sleeker styling. Volkswagen will offer a panoramic roof, a range of audio options, including the FenderPremium Audio System, and a customization program for the 2012 Beetle with a large number of personalization options, including a wide variety of colors and wraps along with an annual theme model.

The 21st Century Beetle Volkswagen states is  agile, driver-oriented coupe experience with a quality of materials that goes beyond all class limits. The car’s styling, ergonomics and quality interact to create a new, friendly car with a highly individual nature. I agree after my first experience in the Beetle.

The shape and use of color in the painted or carbon-look dashboards is just like the design of the first Beetle.
Three round instrument gauges are arranged in front of the driver providing all key information at a glance. A multifunction display is integrated in the speedometer in middle position. The steering wheel is specially designed with optional painted accents in the spokes depending on the equipment line.

Framed by two air vents, the selected audio/navigation system is optimally located in the driver’s visual field on the dashboard.

Within easy reach, climate controls are situated just below.
Similar to the original Beetle, the new car has an extra glove box integrated into the dash. The lid folds upward, while the standard glove box opens downward. Another classic feature: the optional auxiliary instruments above the selected audio/navigation system: oil temperature, clock with stopwatch function and boost pressure gauge.

The “cathedral ceiling” dome roof of the New Beetle has been replaced with a sleek and sporty roofline. Front and rear passenger headroom allows for even the six footer to enter the cabin. . The trunk is significantly larger, offering 10.9 cubic feet of space. A split-folding rear seat and a wide opening trunk lid ease loading and unloading.

The 2012 Beetle will offer three engines: the 2.5L gasoline five cylinder, the 2.0L TDI® Clean Diesel and the 2.0L TSI® turbocharged gasoline engine. Transmission choices will include a 5-speed manual or optional 6-speed automatic on 2.5L models. Volkswagen’s acclaimed DSG® 6-speed dual-clutch transmission will be offered on the TDI Clean Diesel and 2.0L TSI turbocharged gasoline models, while a 6-speed manual will come standard.

As I stated before the 2012 Beetle 2.0L TDI Clean Diesel is the most fuel-efficient Beetle ever. The quiet, four cylinder 2.0L TDI Clean Diesel engine produces 140 hp and 236 lb.-ft of torque. It meets all U.S. emission limits and offers manufacturer estimates of 40 mpg highway, 29 mpg city, and 33 mpg combined.
Fuel economy values are also improved up to 10 percent over prior 2.5L five cylinder engine models. Mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, it offers manufacturer estimates of 22 mpg city and 31 mpg highway. The optional 6-speed automatic offers manufacturer estimates of 22 mpg city, 29 mpg highway. The five cylinder engine produces 170 hp and 177 lb.-ft of torque.

The Beetle 2.0L TSI is the sportiest model offered. With 200 hp and 207 lb.-ft of torque, power delivery will remain smooth and direct across the rpm range. The four cylinder turbo engine is estimated to provide 30 mpg highway fuel economy. To ensure that power is applied properly in challenging conditions, the 2.0L TSI model features the XDS® cross differential (limited-slip) system. The system electronically monitors input from various wheel sensors and, in the event of slippage, transfers extra torque to the wheel or wheels with the most traction.

The 2012 Volkswagen Beetle will be available in two trim lines “Design” and “Sport.” Each has a unique character. The Beetle can also be customized with a wide choice of optional features. Key features include:

Standard in the Beetle is  what the buyers wish for audio the RCD 310 sound system with 8 speakers (includes dual tuner). The premium VIII top audio system is the RCD 510 with integrated CD changer, interface for SD cards and touchscreen. For the first time ever, navigation will be offered in the Beetle, with the RNS 315 featuring a 5-inch touchscreen, CD player and SD card slot.

The transparent, panoramic tilt/slide glass sunroof is 80 percent larger than on the previous model. The insulating glass blocks 99 percent of UV radiation and 92 percent of heat energy. I do not care about that but I love that the sun hits me 100% of the time.

The 2012 Beetle will also offer concert quality sound with an optional Fender Premium Audio System equipped with an additional subwoofer and 400 watts of output power. Embedded in the vehicle design is proprietary Panasonic® speaker technology. The system covers the cabin with directional sound from front door speakers that generate imaging beyond the capabilities of traditional speaker designs. It cuts through the noise and other distractions with front dual voice coil speakers, with extended range for all musical genres. Those choosing this sound system also receive adjustable interior ambiance lighting.

The  Beetle will be offered with Bi-xenon headlights.

The 2012 Beetle features  Volkswagen’s advanced Intelligent Crash Response System, which initiates automatic safety protection in some types of collisions — the electrical supply to the fuel pump is shut off, the doors unlock and the hazard lights switch on. Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is standard, as are driver and front passenger airbags and Side Curtain Protection® airbags in front and rear.

The 21st Century Beetle is also covered under the no-charge Carefree Maintenance Program. All scheduled maintenance is covered for the length of the New Vehicle Warranty – three years or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first.
